Jürgen Eckloff – Diese, Nichts & Solche

German sound artist and filmmaker Jürgen Eckloff (East Berlin, 1978) used to be a core member of the Column One collective until they disbanded in 2016. Eckloff’s audio works often deal with the deconstruction of language and the mechanisms of communication. Since the early 2000s he has released numerous short films, works for radio and records, often released on his own 90% Wasser label, which he has run together with Robert Schalinski from the surroundings of Berlin since 2001. Eckloff’s minimal and repetitive sound pieces are often part of his deconstructionist live performances.

The cassette Diese, Nichts & Solche is Eckloff’s first work for Fragment Factory, Hamburg: three new and beautifully mastered and mixed compositions at the intersection of concrete music, language and field recordings. The cassette has been released in an edition of 100 copies and comes with an A5 postcard with the artwork that Eckloff produced for this release.

Lawrence Ferlinghetti – Northwest Ecolog (first printing, 1978)

Although associated with the Beat Generation, Ferlinghetti did not think of himself as a Beat poet, rather as a San Francisco Renaisssance poet and philosophical anarchist, like his friend and example Kenneth Rexroth. Besides being a poet and publisher, Ferlinghetti was a painter and much of his poetry evokes colourful images of everyday urban America as well as its natural scenery. His Northwest Ecolog combines, as the blurb of this 1978 City Lights edition puts it, “Brief prose flashes and poems of trips ‘up the Coast’ last year, including a Green Peace Voyage, wild river musings, bucolic eclogues and ecological soundings. With Sumi brush drawings by the author.” The condition of this first printing copy is fine with only the slightest discolouring of the cover.

Kiev Stingl – X R I Nuit

Newly arrived from Moloko PLus is the Kiev Stingl CD X R I Nuit. Moloko’s CD was published as a companion to the EP of the same name that was released by Klangbad in 2022. On their website Klangbad announces this trove of Kiev Stingl recordings from 1982 as follows:

… Never-before-heard songs from Germany’s underground legend Kiev Stingl. Released on Klangbad, record label of Hans-Joachim Irmler, founding member of seminal Krautrock band Faust. Enfant terrible Kiev Stingl’s major label discography totals three records, on Philips, Metronome, and Teldec. More than any other German pop artist, Kiev Stingl embodies massive deviance. In 1982, he was arrested by the secret police of Madagascar; accused of assisting the CIA in a coup attempt, he was imprisoned in Antananarivo (Ambohibao) and narrowly escaped a death sentence. Upon release, he entered Teldec Studios in Hamburg to record new songs, accompanied only by Götz Humpf (City Preachers). Due to increasingly eccentric behaviour and a lack of commercial viability, producer Achim Reichel (The Rattles, A.R. & Machines) decided against releasing the recordings. The termination of the sessions marked the end of one of underground music’s most promising careers…

Slowscan releases extraordinary Les Levine album:

Les Levine – Game Room / A Tribute to the great American Loser

American conceptual artist Les Levine (Dublin, 1935) is considered the founder of media art and invented the terms transmedia, camera art, disposable art, media sculpture, software art and body control systems. The A-side of Slowscan Vol. 57 consists of a recording used in Levine’s 1976 installation Game Room at California State University, which was also shown at the M.L. D’Arc Gallery in New York the next year. The installation, the full title of which is Game Room: A Tribute to the great American Loser, consisted of 50 pinball machines and a recorded chorus of voices that shouted at people playing the machines: “Lose, lose, lose. You are going to lose. You’re a loser. L-O-S-E LOSE!”. This mantra of discouragement can now also be enjoyed in the privacy of your home.
The B-side is a work of art that developed during the Watergate hearings of 1973. During the televised hearings Levine made daily sketches of the clothes the witnesses were wearing and named the series of sketches Watergate Fashions. He then recorded on tape detailed descriptions of the way the witnesses dressed stating that “The way they look will far outlast what they said”. And how right he was.

Of the 250 copies that have been pressed of this extraordinary album, 30 are yellow vinyl. Available from Sea Urchin are the yellow vinyl albums as long as they last. Read more & order →

Now edited and re-published by Moloko Plus from Schönebeck, Stingl’s poetry compilation looks and reads as vital, violent and unflinching as it was in 1979. Like much of Stingl’s lyrics, the poems form an exploration of the deeper layers of existence and love. In a rich and original use of the German language, Stingl’s poems lead the reader across a wasteland of the soul full of dizzying heights and abysses.
