German conceptual artist Hans-Peter Feldmann was born in Düsseldorf in 1941. After having studied painting at the University of Arts & Design in Linz, Austria in the 1960s he turned to reproduction techniques and the appropriation of photographic material. Feldmann’s critical attitude to the art world and to notions of originality and unicity have found expression in the many artist’s books, prints, magazines and multiples that he has published over the years, sometimes through his own Feldmann Verlag. The books in Feldmann’s renowned ‘Voyeur’ series are compilations of photographs culled from all sorts of printed matter, apparently randomly juxtaposed without further comments or captions. Freed from their original contexts these images transcend their subject matter and form a detached, at times perplexing, peek into consumer society’s spectacle and, on a deeper level, into human existence and desire.
This particular copy of the rare first printing of Feldmann’s first Voyeur paperback – which was to be reprinted and followed by six other issues – is in fine condition with only the slightest wear to the cover and spine.
